Dessert

I LOVE DESSERT! Seriously I have the biggest sweet tooth ever. Once I ate 7 cupcakes in one day, that same week I ate a grand total of 15 cupcakes. That's ignoring any cookies and candy I might have had inbetween my cupcakes. My favorite cupcake ever was made by my friend Alice, it was german chocolate, with that delish coconut icing. Besides cupcakes I'm a huge fan of ice cream. If I had to choose on type of food to eat for the rest of my life it'd be ice cream. You can't go wrong with the hundreds of avaliable flavors. nom. I worry about my love for sweets in the coming year, Freshmen 50 here I come!! Good thing I found a roommate that wants to work out. Anyway thats all I have to say, I need to go nom a cupcake...

2 more weeks

Only two more weeks of high school! This week I have all my classes but on Friday I get to miss the first half of my day to "study" for my AP in the afternoon, AP European History, yuck. Hopefully I'll have time to do something fun this weekend before diving into my last week. I'll have an AP test the second to last day of school and then the last day is basically just a blow off. Seniors party it up and have the last rally day, which should be really fun. With everything ending I'm getting a little sad. I won't ever see some of these people again, and will only get to see the ones I am closest with a couple times a year. It's scary to go off to college, especailly when it's so far away(going from texas to boston). But it's also really exciting. I just found my roommate and I think we'll have a lot of fun together. This is all SO EXCITING!!

CSS Thoughts

In website design we are now working in CSS. I really like that you can see the page I edit instead of just the HTML code, but the CSS is a bit confusing and a tad stressful. Nothing works the same way as HTML and since I'm used to that I find the CSS challenging, but this is mostly just because it's new. I'm sure that once I have completed my webpage for the Environmental Club that I will understand CSS and will be able to work it easily. By that point I'm sure I'll enjoy it more than HTML. Maybe I'll have a post later about how much I love CSS, we shall see.

New Project!

So in website design we are making webpages for a client. I am working with the environmental club to create a page about our Earth Day festivities. This year the festival(for lack of a better word) will probably include music, food, shirt swap, chalk and FUN! It should be pretty inperesting, and I will be capturing it all on camera so that I can put up pictures on the website I create. I hope to incorporate all of my new website design skills into this new page. I'm super excited!!

This week for my website design class we have been asked to write an essay about a movie we watched, Pirates of Silicon Valley. The question and my essay are below.

Money aside, which of these individuals would you prefer to work with or for? Why?

Some of the greatest technology ever created, the computer. The invention of the personal computer is particularly interesting and is outlined in the movie, Pirates of Silicon Valley. The film switches back and forth between the lives of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as they work to create the world’s first personal computers, and how they are connected in following the same dream. While the story unfolds we see how both of these men treat their employees and how they act as employers.

In the movie Bill Gates makes me laugh. He is so nerdy and socially awkward. I like him because of this, he seems so awkward that I don’t feel threatened by him or anything, he just seems adorable. The thing is he is so driven and working so hard to get what he wants that he does some things I don’t like. He yells and steals. I personally work best with encouragement, not yelling, so working for Bill Gates wouldn’t work well for me. He also steals information from Steve Jobs, and essentially steals from the guy who he buys the monitor from. While I don’t like either of these things I appreciate that while he is working toward his goal he doesn’t leave his friends behind. He isn’t a one man show working for solely his own benefit.

On the other hand there is Steve Jobs. He is very different from Bill Gates, but at the same time, very similar. They are the same in that they both yell and steal. Steve Jobs took computer programming from Xerox, while the guys in charge of Xerox in New York allowed this it was still basically stealing the information. He also yells, a lot. He was a slave driver when it came to creating new Apple computers. His employees would be working 70 hour weeks and he would go around yelling at them in the middle of the night not being satisfied with their work. This is definitely not a work environment I could deal with. Yelling at me to work is one thing, but yelling at me to work in the middle of the night while I’m working and doing as much as I can is so not going to work. Besides these things which make Steve Jobs similar to Bill Gates there are also things that make them different. While Steve Jobs was working his way to the top he was only worried about himself. He left behind his best friend Steve Wozniak, his girlfriend and his daughter Lisa. This is not behavior I respect in a human being, much less an employer. On top of that he is rude and holds grudges. His grudge against IBM led him not to hire someone, just because he had previously worked there. This guy was qualified and hadn’t done anything wrong but Steve Jobs was disrespectful, I could never deal with this rudeness.

Honestly I wouldn’t want to work for either of these men. I know that I could never put up with working for Steve Jobs as he is portrayed in the movie, and so by process of elimination I would have to choose Bill Gates. For me Bill Gates is just the lesser of two “evils”.

The Donuts Were a BAD idea

Alright, so yesterday I was babysitting, two girls one 14 and one 12 with special needs. The 14 year old decides that she wants to make donuts. She has the "perfect" plan, go buy Pillsbury pizza dough and fry it. (Yuck!) I ask if this is something she has done before, yes yes of course she has. Now usually I don't automatically believe the kids I babysit, and don't go along with whatever silly project/activity they want to do, but yesterday was different. The combination of the fact that I was sooo tired and too lazy to come up with another idea, the fact that she really is trustworthy, and the fact that she is pretty independent and really doesn't even need a babysitter made me decide to go along with her little plan. So we headed off to the grocery store and got us some pizza dough. We got back to the house and heated up some oil. Once it was hot we started putting balls of the dough in. It wasn't really working, the outside would burn but the inside would still not be cooked. I asked again if she had really done this before. She said yes, but fessed up that it didn't work last time either. GREAT, gross donuts and a mess to clean up, freaking fantastic. If that wasn't bad enough the oil started smoking. Immediately I turn off that stove and we turn on the fan. This wasn't helping. The house was filling with smoke, so I take the pot outside and set it in the dirt. The oil was still smoking. By this time we have all the doors and windows open and I'm getting a little frazzled. The babysitter that was supposed to stay with the girls over night was on her way, what would she think of me with this crazy disaster going on. I decide that the smoking oil needs to stop. So I grab a hose, stand far away and spray the pot down, I'm sure you know what happens next, EXPLOSION!!! I must say it was pretty awesome, and it's a good thing I knew to stand back. Anyway a couple minutes later the other babysitter shows up to the smoke filled house. Turns out she is cool and totally understands this cooking disaster. I left a voicemail on the mom's phone, she hasn't called me back. I know I'll be hired again because the mom and I are good family friends and she is very chill, I'm just looking for that reassuring, "Blair it's no big deal" call. Anyway the moral of the story is that you should stick to buying donuts instead of stupidly letting the child you're babysitting convince you it's cool to make them yourself.

Mini Rant

Alright folks (such an odd word) it is time for a mini rant session. I have recently found a new pet peeve. People trying to look like something they're not. For example there is no reason to dress in all black and grey with tons of dark eye liner if you are a happy bubbly person whose secret favorite color is hot pink. Along the same lines don't wear super conservative outfits when we all know you are dying to wear some hard core rock attire. Or if you are basically the definition of the perfect prep school girl, then why do you feel the need to be the bad girl pierced and tattooed all over? Or the goody two shoes that wears "dresses" that are the length of a shirt. Honestly I can't stand the slutty clothing to begin with, if we can see "you" when we're behind you walking up stairs then it's too short, i don't need to see that. So while I don't like these types of outfits to begin with, it bothers me much more when they are the exact opposite of who you are. a good girl doing it just gives off the wrong impression. Now I know that even I every once in a while want to dress like "something I'm not" sometimes I want to rock the dark eye liner etc. even wear something a bit more sexy, but I wouldn't do it all the time because that is not who I am and I wouldn't want people thinking that that is who I am and give them the wrong idea. Anyway that's my rant session, anyone agree with me? disagree?
